On the conceptual potential of prefixes

Abstract: 

Prefixal units (poly, alter, quasi, super, etc.), although their belonging to one of the parts of speech is debatable, actively participate in the creation of neologisms in the modern French literary language. The purpose of the study is to consider different nuances of the cognitive potential of the formantis anti-, which is still underresearched. The prefix anti-(anti), as the object of our study, is used to express the idea of antonymy in a broad sense and corresponds, according to explanatory dictionaries, to the idea of opposition and hostility. As a hypothesis we assume that the prefix anti - has a considerable conceptual capacity that explains the rise in the number of neologisms formed with its participation. The research is based, mainly, on sources in the French language. The article discusses the semantic nuances of this prefix in the texts from the sphere of culture at large: literature, music, and philosophy. The authors of dystopia tried to go beyond the usual boundaries of established social representations, abolishing some cultural stereotypes for the sake of expanding the space of thoughts, ideas, images and symbols. In the names of musicological treatises, the morpheme anti actualizes the semantics of comparison and juxtaposition, without denying the importance of the music trend under discussion, which is a common technique in art criticism. In literary and musical criticism, this phenomenon, indicated by a root word, is sharply criticized. However, denying some of the myths that have arisen in society and are related to the life and creative work of poets and writers, critics are unable destroy them. Therefore, an attempt to justify the idea of “opposition” is futile. The characters, expressing a polemical potential, those associated with the concept of anti-, are, according to Y. S. Stepanov, defeated, as they fail to bear comparison with the character denoted by the root word.
