President's welcome speeches as a genre of diplomatic discourse

Abstract: 

This article studies structural and linguistic features of the welcome speeches by the President of the Russian Federation, delivered during the presentation of credentials by foreign ambassadors. The President's speech is extremely important, as it begins the acquaintance of the head of state with the plenipotentiary ambassadors of foreign countries and holds directions for further mutually beneficial cooperation. The relevance of the research topic is determined by the great attention, which researchers in various fields pay to the issues of international politics, in particular, to the problems of mutual relations between different countries. These aspects are especially significant in the era of global conflicts and terrorist threats. The purpose of this article is to identify the structure and linguistic features of the texts under study as a speech genre of diplomatic discourse. The empirical material is based on shorthand records of the welcome speeches by the President of the Russian Federation that were published on the official website of the Government of the Russian Federation in 20102017. A linguistic analysis of these texts has revealed a clear structure of the welcome speech, including a number of mandatory elements, as well as the most frequent language tools that are characteristic of diplomatic discourse as a complex kind of institutional discourse, combining the features of various forms of verbal communication.
