DENOTATION OF EARTH (RUSS. ОТЧИНА) IN THE RUSSIAN EPIC POEMS

Abstract:

The present article examines the denotations of earth (Russ. отчина) in the Russian epic poems (былины). The principal result of this study is the elaboration of a specialized methodology for describing the epic word and a comprehensive analysis of material that considers the text’s grammar (i.e., the distribution of lexemes by case and number), etymology (reflecting the potency of words in a comparative historical perspective), mythology (gravitation towards a certain myth, plot or motif), and poetics (occurrence in alliteration and other sound repetition and anagrams). This makes it possible to identify a series of criteria that determine the functioning of this designation of the earth in the Russian epic poems.

Key words:

the epic word, context, the text’s grammar, the syntactic function, the mythopoeic model of the universe.
