SEMANTIC TYPES OF RUSSIAN RELATIVE CLAUSES: ANALYSIS OF CORPUS DATA

Abstract:

The paper reports on various morphosyntactic, semantic and prosodic parameters used to distinguish restrictive relative clauses in Russian from appositive ones by means of the corpus analysis. The analysis of the restrictive/appositive distinction suggests that (i) the relative pronoun in restrictives and appositives should have different syntactic features and semantic interpretations (an anaphoric proform in appositives and a wh-operator in restrictives); (ii) the shift of the relative pronoun should be due to the scope of reasons with restrictives but with appositives it should be due to the information structure reasons; and (iii) restrictives and appositives should differ with respect to their position in the noun phrase (appositives should be DP adjuncts whereas restrictives should be below DP level).
