TO THE ETYMOLOGY OF THE LINGUISTIC CULTURAL CONCEPT "GENTLEMAN"

Abstract: 

The article deals with the question of the origin and development of the lexical nomination applied to the British upper class – the linguistic cultural concept "gentleman". A complex lexicographical analysis of the diachronic development of the given lexical unit is carried out; its synonymic and antonymic rows are defined; the basic rules of its functioning are singled out; the axiological and pragmatic aspects of using the term "gentleman" and its derivatives in phraseology and stylistics are highlighted.
