W. Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet” in Russian and Tatar translations: M. Lozinsky and N. Isanbet

Abstract: 

The article gives a small conceptual “extract” from the comparative analysis of Russian and Tatar translations of the tragedy “Hamlet” by W. Shakespeare. The names of the best known translators are Mikhail Lozinsky and Naki Isanbet. Specific comparative material is presented against a broad cultural background. We demonstrate, in particular, the features, characterizing the reception of “Shakespearean text” in Russian and Tatar cultures, identify certain parameters of his own artistic perceptions and interpretations and conduct a microanalysis of the text in comparative and contrastive aspects. Thus, we show that M. L. Lozinsky and N. Isanbet, being contemporaries of the Soviet times, maintained the similar view of the translation principles. From their point of view, translation should convey not only the “spirit’, but also the “letter” of the original; the interpreter’s personal features were to be imperceptible, hidden, as if standing outside the scope of the translated copy. At the same time, N. Isanbet’s translation, oriented towards Tatar readers and spectators, is freer in comparison with M. L. Lozinsky’s. He activates the semiotic codes, understandable in the traditional Tatar culture. This applies, in particular, to the verse size (6-feet free iambic verse instead of 5-feet, the former is the closest meter to the Tatar folk-speech element). On the other hand, there is a tendency to accuracy in nuances with respect to the choice of words (N. Isanbet translated from the English original, verifying his translation against M. L. Lozinsky’s variant, already existing by that time). It is noted that the research is promising as it takes into account the attention paid to the “Shakespearean theme” in a theatrical vein.
