Situations with the artistic-aesthetic category of “case” in the Tatar translation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel “Anna Karenina”: Stylistic aspects


The theme of this article is conditioned by the interest in the translation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel “Anna Karenina” into the Tatar language fulfilled by Makhmud Maksud over half a century ago. The article considers it from the viewpoint of necessity to rethink and reassess stylistic peculiarities of this translation in accordance with the requirements of the modern Tatar literary language. M. Maksud’s work is an only experience of translating the novel into the Tatar language. It completely met cognitive and aesthetic requirements of its time. This article examines stylistic peculiarities of the translation within the framework of the situations, containing the artistic and aesthetic category of “case”. Our textual analysis made it possible to identify and describe a wide range of inaccuracies, which can be easily eliminated from the viewpoint of the contemporary Tatar literary language: now philologists in the sphere of the Tatar language are trying to reduce the excessive number of borrowings in the language. The analysis showed the abundance of Russian and foreign words and expressions in the Tatar text. Stylistic inaccuracies, explained by insufficiency of language intuition, present a separate category of translation deviations.
