Language competition in the context of globalization: Pragmatism and ideal interests of young people (the example of Tatarstan)


This article analyzes different trends of the language situation among young people in modern Tatarstan and examines the competition of Russian, Tatar and foreign languages in the dynamic labour market under globalization. It reveals the grounds for the youth’s preferences in the field of language, their leading stimulus being social mobility. At the same time, features of glocalisation can be traced, when the Tatar youth, driven by ideal interests, use globalization forms to develop Tatar urban culture and implement projects promoting the Tatar language in Tatarstan.
