Indian languages of Venezuela: Current state


The article considers language families and independent Indian languages of Venezuelan Spanish and analyzes their current state: a quantitative ratio of mono- and bilinguals, the territory of distribution and language policy. The article also provides examples of native American Indian words functioning in the modern speech of Venezuelans, which are selected by the method of continuous sampling from the Diccionario de venezolanismos. All examples are translated and have a linguistic-culturological comment. The article concludes by describing measures, undertaken to preserve and develop the Indian languages of Venezuela.
