Religious-mythological taboos, regulations and beliefs in the life of the Cossacks (based on the Don dialects)

Abstract: 

The article deals with ethnocultural and linguocultural approaches to the facts found in modern dialects, and discusses religious-mythological taboos, regulations and beliefs governing the ritual and everyday life of the Cossacks. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the demonological vocabulary and phraseology associated with traditional beliefs of the people. The oral form of the dialects generates such features of dialectal speech as synonymy, variability of the structure and semantics of dialect words as evidenced by the analysis of lexical units belonging to the religious and mythological world image of the Cossacks.
