The role of paradoxes in the process of phraseological unit formation

Abstract:

The paper studies the process of phraseologization beginning at the point of a prototype as a free word combination until it becomes a phraseological unit from a semiotic angle. The formation of its grammatical and componential structure is demonstrated with the help of exact examples. Linguistic bases of the units under analysis are made up out of semantically unacceptable collocation of words. It provides expressivity of phraseological units and their bright imagery. The results of the research witness that paradoxes can be observed at different levels of phraseological systems of any language.

Key words:

phraseological unit, prototype, implicature, linguistic sign, imagery, expressivity, denotational, significative, connotational, macrocomponent of meaning.
