A verbal mode of representing the concept of movement in the linguistic consciousness of native German language speakers (based on a directional associative experiment)

Abstract: 

This article presents the results of a stage in a comprehensive cognitive-discursive study of verbs of ‘motion and movement in space’. It also describes a range of views on motion and the most relevant features of the concept of movement in the linguistic consciousness of native German language speakers belonging to a social group of students. This description, made in the course of a directional associative experiment, is based on a quantitative analysis and lexical-semantic systematization of the verbal meanings. The article determines a prototypical image of ‘movement in space’, namely the image of the verb laufen, which explicates the movement with legs in a vertical position at a fast pace on the surface of the earth. Also, according to the index of brightness, a hierarchy of meanings of the seme of ‘movement in space’ is built.
