Discourse markers as a formal operator in explicitation research: From corpus data to discourse analysis

This paper discusses the concept of explicitation both as a technique and a universal of translation in terms of descriptive translation studies, communication and discourse studies. A discourse marker is viewed as a formal operator for researching potential translation universals, explicitation research, in particular. The paper also presents a project to study contrastive discourse markers in translated discourse. The project incorporates a quantitative analysis of a comparable corpus of translated and original Russian contemporary literary prose, and a qualitative study of the subcorpora singled out from the main and parallel corpora of the Russian National Corpus. New directions in using discourse markers in translation research are outlined.

Key words:

explicitation, universals of translation, discourse markers, corpus-based translation studies, translated discourse.
