Interconnection between semantic properties of idioms and their syntactic behavior: Comparative aspects

Abstract:

This paper deals with semantic properties of idioms that influence their syntactic behavior. The results of the study reveal that there exist special conditions for the formation of standard passive constructions. Adhering to these conditions allows us to perform such transformations without any deviation from the standards of usage. The research has revealed that under passiviation, the requirement for an agentive-transitive interpretation is fulfilled both with regard to the actual meaning of idioms and their image component. Another key point is that there exist semantic-structural factors of passivisation besides the general semantic requirement for passivisation. The paper also examines the conditions for manifestations of external and internal syntagmatic links of nominal groups.

Key words:

idiom, semantics, passivisation, transformation.
