Negative similes within the semantic structure of Russian paroemiae

Abstract:

The subject of the research is proverbs, which are defined as anonymous aphorisms, stable in the language and reproducible in speech, which have a figurative meaning as distinct from their derivational base, and are suitable for some didactic purposes. The subject matter analyzed is a cognitive mechanism dubbed a negative simile. When the semantic structure of such paroemiae includes a negative simile or juxtaposition, its base turns out to be indefinite. All they signal is the lack of sameness between two entities. Having certain outward structural and grammatical similarities, paroemiae based on a negative simile/juxtaposition make it possible to convey various logical relations: the negation of inclusion, the negation of cause-and-effect relationship, overlapping in meanings, and the contrast between entities.

Key words:

paroemia, proverb, semantic structure, simile, negative simile, juxtaposition, logical relations.
