The semantic potential of the word and its implementation in speech

Abstract:

The article describes the influence of Russian poetry of the first half of the nineteenth century on the development and enrichment of the lexical-semantic system of the modern literary language. Authors’ figurative devices, found in the poetry of the first half of the nineteenth century, became the elements of the literary language lexis as early as in the middle of the twentieth century. This change in the status of author's poetic devices is explored on the basis of the Russian National Corpus, and is the result of the analysis of a psycholinguistic associative experiment and a comparative study of Russian lexicography of the nineteenth – twentieth centuries. The article analyzes the interpretations of lexemes, which the poets of the first half of the nineteenth century regard as figurative expressions, in the dictionaries containing the vocabulary of this period, and the definitions of the same lexemes in the dictionaries of the second half of the twentieth century. The conclusion is made about the active process of enrichment taking place in the modern Russian literary language based on the figurative devices of Russian poetry.
