Comparison of Russian and Chinese adpositions against the background of language typology

Abstract: 

This article discusses all kinds of adposition and adpositional phrases in Russian and Chinese. Based on a large amount of examples, the article demonstrates typological features and functions of adpositions. The authors identify common and distinct features of adpositions in the two languages, correlating them with the language universals and language types, they inquire into the factors, which determine the word order in Russian and Chinese adpositional phrases, basing on the comparative analysis. The word order in adpositional structures correlates with the corresponding typical word order of the compared language. The ambiguous adpositional phrases are explained from the viewpoint of language universals.
