Verbalization of the cardinal directions in the Russian dialects of the Krasnoyarsk Territory (semiotic binary oppositions East-West, South-North)

Abstract: 

The lexical system of the dialects allows the reconstruction of the Siberian peoples’ linguistic worldview. The article explores linguistic verbalization of the semiotic binary opposition east-west and south-north (based on dialectal sources) and the ritual role of lexemes included in the opposition. It also analyzes the relationship between the cardinal directions and meteorological names. Private notions of Krasnoyarsk peasants about the world and their own position in it are realized in the lexical items of the dialect that are semantically related to these oppositions.
