The ways of denoting spatial dimensions широкий/узкий (wide/narrow) in Russian and Chinese


This paper explores the asymmetries of широкий/узкий, the adjectives denoting spatial dimensions in their basic meaning in both Russian and Chinese as well as the issue of non-equivalence in their translation. Accordingly, conversion as the basic translation strategy has been worded out to deal with such adjectives in their translation. On the basis of a comparative analysis, we concluded that the adjectives широкий/узкий in Russian and Chinese are different ones when used to describe the dimension that is static. They have complex semantic structures and function differently in both literal and figurative meanings. Our research has shown that transformation is one of the most effective ways to translate adjectives denoting spatial dimensions from Russian to Chinese for they are non-equivalent.
