Difficulties in translation: The names of games from Russian to English in the novel «The Luzhin Defence» by V.V.Nabokov

Abstract: 

The article analyzes the notion "game text" and explores the difficulties in translation of Russian names of games to English in the novel "The Luzhin Defence" by V.V.Nabokov. The author provides a review of the most interesting and significant works devoted to the study of the game phenomenon. Besides, the article studies contextual features of translations of non-equivalent lexis naming different games. The given samples make it possible to suggest, that the games, described in the novel "The Luzhin Defence" by V.V.Nabokov, could be divided into groups according to their prevalence. Examples of use and translation of lexemes, naming different games, are analyzed, and the conclusion is made that such translation strategies as replacing a game name by its equivalent, adding a definition, and selecting names for similar games, which are more familiar to native speakers of English, are used in the novel "The Luzhin Defence" by V.V.Nabokov.
