Works of the Russian avant-garde writers: zaum’ (nonsense) or abstruse language? An attempt to differentiate these concepts

Abstract: 

The article studies the terms zaum’ and abstruse language. The author makes an attempt to distinguish the term zaum’ from abstruse language from the perspective of linguistics. The author comes to the conclusion that it is possible to differentiate these terms as a dichotomy in accordance with the following properties inherent in these terms: linguistic properties (abstruse language) and non-linguistic properties (zaum), antecedence (zaum’) and replication (abstruse language), consciousness (abstruse language) and unconsciousness (zaum’), general collective properties (zaum’) and individual creative properties (abstruse language).
