Areal features of Spanish in Nicaragua


The article focuses on the actual linguistic situation in Nicaragua, provides a brief historical review, and describes the language policy of the country. The author gives characteristics of indigenous languages that influenced the formation of Nicaraguan local variation of Spanish. The article also provides some examples of linguistic borrowings from the Indian languages. The author adduces a classification of semantic groups of borrowings and analyzes some differences between the Iberian and Nicaraguan Spanish at the morphological and lexical levels.
