EVALUATIVE COMPONENT OF THE ARTISTIC DISCOURSE AND THE MEANS OF ITS ACTUALIZATION (BASED ON THE STORIES «THE ALIEN CORN» AND «THE DREAM» BY W.S.MAUGHAM)

Abstract:

This article focuses on the ways the evaluative component of the syntactic evaluative constructions is realized at the level of text. The analysis of the two short stories by W.S.Maugham shows that there are two levels at which evaluative component is actualized in discourse. The first level is represented by direct and indirect appraisals of the characters and events of the story given by the author explicitly (through the narrator’s speech) or implicitly (through the author’s indirect evaluations) while the second one is the interaction of the two narrative modalities (the author’s and the narrator‘s) which leads to the unification of the two defined parts and the subsequent integration of the evaluative component into the title itself.

Key words:

evaluative construction, discourse, subjective narration, author’s evaluative modality.
