SCHOOL SUICIDE IN THE DRAMA OF EXPRESSIONISM (BASED ON FRANK WEDEKIND’S PLAY «SPRING AWAKENING»)

Abstract:

The social and economic changes of the 19th – 20th century in Germany were the cause of many family conflicts, which sometimes took extreme forms and entailed child suicide. The German school system with its indisputable teacher’s authority and pupils’ inability of self-actualization intensified the conflict between the younger and older generations (in particular, fathers and children, students and teachers). This conflict was often resolved tragically, by the pupil’s suicide. Suicide attempts were made by many young people of that time. For teenagers suicide was not just the way to get away from solving the prob-lem, but a kind of resolution, because it manifested their protest against the adults with their bourgeois pseudo-morale.

Key words:

Frank Wedekind, conflict of younger and older generations, expressionism, suicide, German drama.
