BOUNDARIES BETWEEN FICTION AND NON-FICTION IN CHEKHOV’S WORKS

Abstract:

The key moment of Anton Chekhov’s literary strategy, reflected in his works of the 1880-1890’s, was de-lineation of the main genres of prose, such as publicistic (the obituary on the Russian explorer N.M.Przhevalsky), docufictional (the travel notes From Siberia), strictly documental (the scientific study of the convicts’ life The Island of Sakhalin), epistolary genres and fiction. The basis of Chekhov’s strategy was his epistemology and esthetics of modesty. He realized new boundaries and possibilities of fiction and non-fiction in the world of modern science and aspired to absolute truth and natural simplicity in art.

Key words:

Chekhov, boundaries between fiction and non-fiction.
